Criteria for Flu Shots is Extended
Since the onset, duration and severity of flu season is unpredictable, and different types of strains if influenza circulates throughout flu season the West Central Health District has expanded the groups of people recommended to receive the vaccine, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, doses are available to anyone who would like to receive the vaccine. It will be a first come, first serve basis during normal business hours.
In addition, CDC also recommends that persons who are in close contact of high risk people, such as other household members, caregivers and health care personnel should also get vaccinated in order to protect their loved ones or those they care for. Vaccination of those who live with or care for infants is particularly important because children less than six months of age should not get a flu vaccine. Vaccination is also encouraged for anyone who wants to decrease his or her risk of getting the flu.
You can decrease your chance of getting the flu by washing your hands and avoiding touching your nose, eyes, and mouth. You should also cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and stay home from work or school when you are sick. Typical influenza symptoms include fever, body aches, tiredness, cough, and sometimes a sore throat and runny nose.
The pneumonia vaccine may also be available for individuals who have specific risk factors. The cost of the influenza vaccine is $20.00, and $14.00 for the pneumonia vaccine. Individuals should bring proof of identity as well as their Medicaid or Medicare card with them. We also accept checks as other forms of payment. For more information please call your local health department.
