Department of Public Health
The Stewart County Public Health Department offers the following programs and services.
Vital Records
Vital Records – maintains records of all births and deaths occurring in Stewart County. Services include the issuance and/or amending of birth and death certificates, assistance in filing delayed birth certificates and issuance of burial permits to funeral homes Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:30.
Adult Health
District Clinical Services – provides HIV/AIDS/TB and other communicable disease education, counseling, testing, confidential partner notification, surveillance, case management and clinical services Monday through Friday.
STD Screening and Treatment – offers confidential screening and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV counseling, testing, and confidential partner notification for Stewart County residents Monday through Friday 8:30 to 4:30.
Health Education – provided to interested persons, organizations and agencies. Focus is on prevention and education addressing various health topics. Educational pamphlets, resource speaker(s), assistance with program planning, and information and referral sources are available. Service is located in the District Office with Stewart County Health Department coordinating the services requested.
Immunizations – provided for all ages. Immunizations including diphtheria, tetanus, influenza and pneumonia (seasonally), pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), HIB, polio, and HEB are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30.
Hypertension/Diabetes Services – offer detection, treatment, monitoring, referral, follow-up and patient education for some of the chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, colon, rectal, cervical, pelvic and breast cancers. Services are provided to Georgia residents 18 years and older Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30.
TB – offers detection, treatment, education and follow-up on the Tuberculosis (TB) germ Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:30.
General Clinic – offers walk in services for rabies contact/follow-up, head lice checks, lead screenings, pregnancy testing, newborn screening and PPD testing from 8:30 to 4:00.
Women’s Health
Women’s Health – provides women with a complete physical exam including cancer screening (Pap smears, breast and colorectal exams) and diabetes screening. Services include screenings for communicable and sexually transmitted diseases, education and counseling on healthy lifestyle choices and birth control options by appointment.
Genetics – provides screening for early detection of birth defects. The Newborn Screening Program tests for diseases that may cause early infant death or mental retardation. Screening for selected blood disorders such as Sickle Cell, anemia, and Thalassemia are offered as well. Patients are seen by referral from physicians and other health care providers Monday through Friday.
BreasTest and More – screens for breast and cervical cancer, breast exam, Pap smear, screening mammogram for women 50 to 64 years of age, low-income, no insurance or underinsured by appointment.
WIC – provides comprehensive health and nutrition services that encourage wellness, healthy lifestyles and preventive health care. Nutrition education services and nutritious supplemental food vouchers are available to eligible Women, Infants and Children up to five years of age by appointment.
Perinatal Case Management – assists pregnant Medicaid eligible women to gain access to comprehensive medical, nutritional, social and educational services throughout their pregnancy. Close follow-up on a monthly basis is maintained to provide support as needed. Services are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30.
Maternal High Risk Pregnancy Program – provides benefits to cover the cost of prenatal care and delivery for at risk pregnant women who are not eligible for Medicaid. Call for an appointment or referral.
Child and Adolescent Health
Immunizations – provided for all ages. Immunizations including diphtheria, tetanus, influenza, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), HIB, polio, and HEB are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30.
School Health Services – provides scoliosis screening for all junior high students, immunization audits of kindergarten and first grade students, and daycare/school certificates.
Child Health WIC – provides comprehensive health and nutrition services that encourage wellness, healthy lifestyles and preventive health care. Nutrition education services and nutritious supplemental food vouchers are available to eligible Women, Infants and Children up to five years of age every Monday from 8:30 to 4:00.
Health Check – is a comprehensive physical exam for children, which includes developmental and nutritional assessments. Screenings for vision, hearing, dental, and lead are a vital part of this clinic. Services are provided for children from birth to 21 years of age by appointment.
Babies Can’t Wait – provides health education and social services for families of children who may be developmentally delayed. Children from birth to 3 years of age, who may be developmentally delayed, are eligible for services Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30.
Children 1st – provides a system of identification, linking, monitoring, access to primary health care and service coordination for children 0-5 years of age who are at risk for poor health and/or development 8:30 to 4:30.
Children’s Medical Services – provides treatment and services to children with special health care needs. In addition, it helps children from birth to 21 years of age to attain/maintain their optimum level of health and functioning. Services are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:00.
Teen Health Services – promotes optimal health in all teens, males and females, up to the age of 19. Counseling is provided on abstinence, birth control methods to prevent or delay teen pregnancy, STD’s, nutrition, and referrals are made as needed. All visits are CONFIDENTIAL Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:00 by appointment.
Environmental Health
Inspections – motels, restaurants, assisted living agencies, foster homes, schools, public swimming pools, and other sites to promote a healthy environment for all. Provides regulation, permitting, and where required enforcement.
Disease Control – provides programs for insect, rodent, and rabies as well as food and water borne illnesses.
Pollution Control – services include investigations of conditions related to environmental health, water testing, septic tanks, lead poisoning, air quality, asbestos, radon, and others.
Education – provides programs to schools, communities, businesses, civic groups, and individuals.
Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Medical Services – provides for the arrangement of personnel, instruction, facilities and equipment for the effective and coordinated delivery of pre-hospital emergency care services. For medical emergencies call Stewart County EMS at (229) 838-4911.
