1,800 Children Per Year Fatally Injured at Home

Each year in the United States, more than 1,800 children ages 4 and under die from accidental injuries in the home, and more than 3 million children ages 14 and under are treated in emergency rooms for accidental injuries occurring at home. Most fatal injuries at home are caused by suffocation, fire and burns, drowning, choking, falls, poisoning or firearms discharged unintentionally. Read more >>

Carbon Monoxide: Invisible Winter Hazard

As colder weather approaches, Safe Kids Columbus reminds parents and caregivers that space heaters can cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to build up in the home. School Bus Safety Week

October 15-21 is National School Bus Safety Week, and Safe Kids Columbus reminds parents and caregivers that more than 25 children each year die in pedestrian accidents involving school buses. In fact, three times as many children are killed in school bus accidents while getting on or off the bus than while riding it. Fire Prevention Week

Nationwide, every year, nearly 2,000 children ages 14 and under are injured in residential fires, and more than 400 die. October 8-14 is Fire Prevention Week, observed every year since 1922 around the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Pedestrian Safety News Release

Dawson Elementary, Dimon Elementary, and St. Mary’s Road Elementary in Columbus will be joining 3,000 schools from all 50 states in the U.S., and schools in 36 countries from around the world to celebrate the 9th Annual “International Walk To School Day” event on October 4, 2006 as a part of the ‘Walk This Way’ program. Pedestrian Safety Editorial

In Columbus, 117 children fourteen and under, were injured by being hit by a vehicle. Three child pedestrians died when a vehicle struck them. Safe Kids Columbus reminds the community to watch for child pedestrians and to watch for the new Walk Route signs. Safe Kids Columbus and program Sponsor FedEx Express worked with the Traffic Engineering Division to place Walk Route signs in the neighborhoods around St. Mary’s Road Elementary, Dawson Elementary and Dimon Elementary. These Walk Routes warn drivers that children may be walking nearby. Read more >>
