Water Safety

It only takes a matter of seconds for a child to drown. Even those who survive can be left with permanent brain damage. Many children drown in their own homes in bathtubs, toilets and buckets of only a few inches of water. Ditches, post holes, wells, fish ponds and fountains are other forms of hazards commonly found near many homes. Never leave your child alone near water. Many drownings of school-age children occur in oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams. Swimming pools are the number one drowning risk for preschoolers. However, swimming lessons are not recommended for children younger than 3 years old. Older children should be taught swimming lessons by a certified teacher.

Columbus Parks and Recreation has partnered with Safe Kids to teach children ages 14 and under about safe practices in and around a pool setting. Among some of the activities are life vest fittings, rescue techniques in the water, and video presentations.

Remember, teaching your child to swim does not mean he or she is safe in the water alone. Children must be watched at all times.
