Wheels Safety

Bicycling and skating are a seemingly inevitable part of childhood. Unfortunately, the injuries that come with these activities also seem to be just as inevitable if not probable. It is imperative that every member and leader in the community does all that can be done to reduce the severity of these injuries. Safe Kids Columbus is committed to reducing the number of injures that children receive by educating them to become better cyclists with regard to helmet usage and the rules of the road. Safe Kids Columbus notifies educators employed by the local schools about the programs that it has to offer. When Safe Kids Columbus is invited to the schools, bicycle safely is taught to students in an assembly or classroom setting. Literature and helmets are given out. The helmets are sized and fitted properly.

Bike “Rodeos” are hands-on community safety fairs specifically targeting bicycle safety. Literature and helmets are given out here also. The helmets are sized and fitted properly. Participants are put through an obstacle course that simulates situations that will be seen on the road. Examples of these obstacles include how to negotiate a four-way intersection or simply how to safely exit ones’ own driveway. Rules of the road are emphasized, including hand/arm signals and the various traffic signals.

With the cooperation of the community and the local schools, much can be done to reduce injuries from cycling and Safe Kids Columbus is proud to be a leader in this cause.
